About Me
Hi, my name is Andre Viljoen. Most people just call me Andre (because very few can pronounce my surname – if you say ‘FIL-YUN’ you will be spot on!!).
So what do I do as a dentist? In a nutshell, I pull things out and I screw things in! By this I mean I specialise in tooth removal (exodontia) and implant dentistry. For many years I have limited my services to just these two areas of dentistry so that I can focus on providing a very high level of service. Also, I have a special interest in pain and anxiety management (no-one likes going to the dentist – especially me!) so most of the surgery that I carry out is done using intravenous sedation, which is a very pleasant and effective way of having a surgical procedure carried out!
I was born in South Africa and grew up in Cape Town. My initial university training was at the University of Stellenbosch (near Cape Town) where I completed the degrees Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BChD). In 1980, I immigrated to Australia and I have been practising dentistry in Canberra since that time.
In 1992, after completing a Masters degree at the University of Sydney (MDS), I limited my dental services to implant dentistry and minor oral surgery. I have since completed a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Conscious sedation and pain management), I am a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS) and I am currently completing a research program in sedation (Master of Philosophy). I am a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, a Fellow of the Academy of Dentists International and a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
About my team
Without a group of dedicated support personnel, I could not practise quality dentistry. I am very fortunate to have just such a team – my receptionist Lyn, three dedicated dental nurses, two expert dental technicians (who have worked with me for over 25 years) all contribute to provide you with the very best care. You will be treated with courtesy and respect by all team members and we will all do our very best to make your experience here a pleasant one.
I have lectured on implant dentistry both nationally and internationally and I have taught implant dentistry for the past 15 years at the University of Sydney where I hold the title of Senior Clinical Associate.
Outside the mouth, I have many interests. My hobby is building and flying aeroplanes – I have a passion for flying and all things aviation – Australia has to be one of the best countries in the world to fly in. I am happily married with three beautiful children (although my girls have flown the nest and are mature young ladies!). My young son keeps my hands full!
